Weaning:
Our donkeys are weaned at 5 - 6 months of age. They can be weaned as
early as 4 months old but never before 4 months,
unless there are circumstances that might affect the health of either
the foal or the mother.
Gestation:
For us the average gestation time has been 12 months, but jennets can
carry a foal from 11 1/2 months to 13 months. Any foal born before
11 months is considered to be premature.
Social Habits:
Miniature donkeys should never be
alone. They are very social animals and need
some form of companion such as another donkey, pony or horse.
Vaccines:
They require an annual preventative vaccination for Eastern/Western
Encephalomyelitis, Tetanus, Rhinopneumonitis and Influenza.
Worming:
We worm every 2 months and rotate wormers. Also removing manure from
stalls, barns and pasture management will reduce or prevent a parasite
problem.
Shelter
All donkeys should have free access to shelter. They need to have a
minimum of a three sided shelter. They must be protected from cold,
wind, rain and hot sun. You should also use a good dry bedding
especially in the winter months to keep your donkey warm.
Don't forget to remove manure daily.
Hoof Care:
Your farrier should visit your farm every eight weeks to trim and file
as needed. WE ALSO MAKE IT A HABIT TO PICK OUT
OUR DONKEYS FEET AL LEAST ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK.
(MORE OFTEN IF THE GROUND HAS BEEN WET AND MUDDY)
Feeding and Nutrition:
Donkeys should have free access to fresh, clean water, (they don't like
warm dirty and there for will not get enough to drink) A constant
mineral salt supplement (we provide both blocks and loose with selenium/
salt mix added) A good quality low molasses grain (weanlings, and bred
or nursing jennets really need to be grained regularly) and in the
winter months a good quality hay. You want to avoid feeding dusty and
moldy hay.
